Project Title
Developing a Diagnostic Tool for Neonatal Bacterial Meningitis Using Glucose and Protein Levels in Cerebrospinal Fluid
Design Challenge
Untreated neonatal meningitis has a death rate of up to 58% in developing countries such as Malawi. The condition involves bacterial or viral infection of the meninges, which can lead to inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Current solutions for diagnosis are time consuming and expensive, which makes them ill suited for low-resource settings. These methods involve multiple tests of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to quantify the various parameters associated with the disease, including glucose, protein, and white blood cell count levels, which can result in a loss of critical diagnosis time. As a result, patient care can be significantly impaired or even completely neglected. Therefore, we aim to develop a low-cost, rapid, and accurate diagnostic tool that involves the concurrent measurement of glucose and protein levels in CSF to help efficiently diagnose and manage the treatment of neonatal meningitis.
