Wind Turbine Blade Disposal
Design Challenge
Wind turbine blades are comprised of various composite based materials, which makes recycling difficult. Avenues attempted have been, grinding up the blades into pellets for reuse into other application or heating sections of the deconstructed blades in large, non-energy friendly ovens to breakdown the fibers. Unfortunately, most wind turbine blades simply end up in landfills as composite waste.
The goal for this project is to develop a set of solutions and recommendations that provide an environmentally safe and cost-effective wind turbine blade decommissioning and disposal strategy.
