Design Challenge
Currently, no sustainable solution exists in the developing world for the prevention of venous thromboembolism, the formation of blood clots in the limbs, for patients who must remain on bed rest after major surgeries in hospitals. The gold standard of treatment, drug delivery, is effective, but requires too much monitoring and is too expensive for use in low resource settings. Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Devices, machines that squeeze the limbs in regular cycles to promote blood flow to the area, have also been shown to be effective, but require too much maintenance and are prohibitively expensive for developing nations, with commercially available systems easily exceeding over $1600. Thus, our team aims to develop a safe, low-cost, durable, over-the-foot Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Device, constructed with widely accessible materials and utilizing minimal mechanization, to prevent venous thromboembolism in low-resource settings and address this gap in care.
