Design Challenge
Compete in the AIAA Design, Build, Fly competition (April 2014). The competition challenges teams from across the United States to develop a custom, fixed wing, electric-powered RC airplane capable of flying a set of "missions" based on this year's theme: Backcountry Bush Plane. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three teams, as well as to the team with the best report. This project tests a team's skills in aerodynamics, structural mechanics, and iterative design.
Design Summary
The proposed aircraft design fulfills the necessary competition requirements by merging innovative design with traditional aircraft engineering. By utilizing the cargo bay space efficiently, the aircraft is able to reduce weight, while maintaining structural rigidity. A clever wing mounting solution allows for easy access to the cargo bay, while a hybrid fuselage construction further reduces weight without compromising strength. The first prototype of this design has been built and based on the discoveries made during its manufacturing and testing, a second prototype has been designed and is ready to be manufactured.
